Smart Ways to Pay for College

College-bound students are about to discover that life provides plenty of invaluable lessons outside the classroom. Included in those lessons is the notion that you should never underestimate yourself, especially when it comes to scholarships.

Every college bound teen dreams of landing a scholarship. Yet, as exciting as this prospect may be to kids (and their parents), most students don't actively pursue scholarships. Their reasons for not searching actively vary: Not enough time, not qualified enough-the list of excuses goes on. If these students had gone the extra mile, they might have been surprised to discover that there are many undiscovered scholarships waiting to be claimed.

More than meets the eye

Perhaps one of the main reasons so many students don't actively pursue a scholarship is that they simply don't feel that they're eligible to receive one. They may have a preconceived notion that grants are given only to top-notch scholars or athletes. While this is true for a hefty portion of scholarships, there are plenty of other opportunities out there for those who aren't elite.

Scholarships are awarded for a number of different reasons. Some are given for a well-written essay. Others may be awarded based on geography, or an intended major. There are even obscure scholarships awarded for left-handed people, Star Trek fans, and others. The key to finding these is to conduct a diligent search.

Surf and ye shall find

Once a student's mind is open to the possibility that he doesn't have to be a blue-chip basketball player or an honor student to net some financial assistance, he can start his search. At this point, sheer will and effort can move mountains. The more aggressive a student is in his hunt, the greater the potential for aid.

What constitutes "aggressive?" It begins with the search. Surf the Internet for scholarship listings, but don't stop there. Keep going, and contact not only your local guidance counselor, but counselors at colleges that look appealing. They might know of scholarships specific to that institution that may hold some promise for you.

Apply yourself-literally

The search is only the tip of the iceberg. If you truly want the scholarship, you'll put in extra time filling out the application. This is the critical part of the process, as a well-worded answer could make all the difference in the hunt. You shouldn't be overly hasty or cut corners when it comes to this paperwork. Competition tends to be stiff for those college dollars, and only the best applications will get the big bucks.

College scholarships are no longer awarded only to top athletes or exceptional students. All types of grants are available to students, but finding them isn't necessarily easy. It's hard work, as is the application process that follows. This challenging work serves as a good life lesson for prospective college students, and may even prove more valuable than the scholarship itself. Students who work hardest in their youth are usually the ones who net the biggest financial rewards down the road.
