Rates Flat, Retail Sales Data Higher Than Expected

Bonds were down on opening after a stronger than expected sales report. Due to strength in bonds yesterday, we'll see retail mortgage rates relatively unchanged today. January Retail sales data rose .3% much greater than the .3% decrease that was expected. However, looking at the core data, excluding auto sales, there was only a .1% margin over expectations. Still bonds were down on the news. Tomorrow we'll hear the testimony of Bernanke to Congress in the afternoon, as well as the December Goods and Services Trade Balance Report, a measure of the deficit and not considered a report important to mortgage rates. We'll also see the relatively unimportant weekly unemployment claims. Bernanke is undoubtedly the item most likely to cause volatility as his comments will be closely scrutinized by the markets.
