Mortgage Rates Tick Up

Mortgage rates tick up yesterday on a historic stock market rally. MortgageLoan.com mortgage rate survey is showing 5.13 percent on the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage. Yesterday's equities market burst upward on surprise announcement by Citigroup CEO that they are having a profitable quarter and Bernanke offering unconditional support to prevent the remaining big banks from failing. Additional factors that may continue to lift markets and mortgage rates are the debates over the up-tick rule to reign in short selling and the suspension of mark-to-market accounting to unwind artificial depreciation of mortgage portfolios and capital assets on bank balance sheets.
