Prepare for Debt Counseling

In Hollywood, the best movies are made when a director knows exactly what he wants to shoot before the filming even starts. You can make your first meeting with a debt counselor just as productive if you bring in all the right materials.

If you're in debt, the best thing you can do about it is accept the reality of the situation. You may have overspent your budget and dug yourself into a pretty deep hole, but what's done is done. It's time to move on and turn your finances around.

A debt consolidation loan might be in your future, but many people choose first to meet with a debt counselor. If you choose this route, be sure to provide the counselor with the right information for a proper assessment.

Reveal your earnings

The first thing a debt counselor will want to see is some documentation of your income. They've dealt with people who exaggerate their earnings because they're too ashamed to admit they're in debt. To effectively reduce what you owe, you can't be in that kind of denial. These professionals want to help you develop an action plan that will work. If you don't provide them with accurate information, they won't be able to do their jobs.

Debt counselors want to see paycheck stubs and W-2 forms. Prior tax returns are also a great idea. Be sure to show them bank statements, 401(k) statements, and anything else that gives them an idea of how much money you've saved in addition to your earnings.

Detail your debt and dreams

Your counselor will also want to learn about your debt. You'll need to show all your regular bills, including balances and minimum payments. Bring all the details on your credit cards and loan balances, such as interest rates and repayment terms.

Once he knows how much you spend each month, a good debt counselor will want to understand your long-term goals. Share with him your retirement plans, other long-term savings ambitions, such as college for your children. Your goals are a critical part of the plan, and the counselor will try to incorporate them, if not this year, then perhaps at some point down the road.

The most important element to bring to your meeting is a positive attitude. Don't resist the counselor's suggestions, or believe that the plan is hopeless. Every day is a step in the right direction, and you'll get there sooner if your outlook is positive. Show some enthusiasm and general commitment, and your debt counselor will enjoy working with you and put extra effort into your planning.

Like a well-prepared film director, your first meeting with a debt counselor will be most effective if you're prepared. Bring in the materials that will provide a counselor with a solid understanding of your assets, your income, your debts, and your financial dreams. Pair the documents with a positive attitude, and you'll have a terrific first meeting.
