Military veterans facing foreclosure or other legal problems are getting some new resources to help them get the information and help they need, including access to benefits and free legal help.
The new campaign, launched by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), will provide information about legal services and create appropriate referral services to help veterans deal with legal issues such as foreclosure, consumer fraud and employment issues.
The first phase of the effort is focusing on 51 VA centers in the mid-Atlantic region, plus Maine and Arkansas.
In addition, the LSC has launched a new web site,
www.StatesideLegal.org, to provide veterans with access to legal information online. Among other things, the site is intended to help them find free legal help, understand legal issues and access legal benefits available to veterans.
Stateside Legal includes information on legal protections for service members facing foreclosure, as well information on such issues as disability benefits and employment. Legal and military terms are explained in a straightforward manner, and videos and interactive forms are provided to help vets advocate for themselves.
Resources for veteran advocates were recently added to the site, with more due in 2011. Additional veterans resources will be added as they are developed.
