Utah - Mortgage Fraud Resources

Foreclosure laws can be complicated, and residents of Utah, or any other state, are increasingly at risk of being impacted by such fraud. The state of Utah has therefore created a number of online resources to educate consumers about mortgage fraud and help them avoid becoming the victim s of mortgage scams.

Consumers can learn more about preventing the possibility of their home being foreclosed by visiting www.utahforeclosureprevention.com. The site has numerous fraud-related links to provide additional guidance.

Other state, federal and private resources are listed below. The FBI has taken a lead in investigating mortgage fraud, the FBI offices around the country work in conjunction with the offices of state and the federal Attorney Generals to prosecute criminals.

The Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offices can help mortgage applicants find the resources they need to make smart mortgage decisions and can provide guidance to homeowners on what questions they should ask while shopping for reputable lenders.

The Utah Department of Financial Institutions helps to set rules, investigate complaints and exercise enforcement/disciplinary authority over the businesses it oversees. It also tracks the mortgage lenders doing business in the state. The state's Division of Real Estate has numerous sources of mortgage fraud information for consumers and can direct them to appropriate contacts for specific questions on mortgage fraud.

Finally, the Better Business Bureau sets forth guidelines in which all businesses should operate and will take steps to ensure that consumers are being treated fairly by businesses across the country.
