Tennessee - Mortgage Fraud Resources

There is a wealth of resources available in Tennessee for the reporting of potential mortgage fraud cases. It is recommended that borrowers contact the Office of the Attorney General if you are worried about the impact of potential mortgage fraud.

The state took steps in 2007 and 2008 to more closely regulate mortgage companies that do business there. For example, mortgage lenders and salespeople who practice within the state must go through a lengthy certification process before they can begin practicing within the state.

Law enforcement agencies, such as local police sheriff's departments, can be contacted for more information on reporting a fraudulent case. The FBI plays a lead role in investigating frauds of all kinds, including mortgage fraud. FBI field offices work in conjunction with the offices of the state and U.S. attorneys general to prosecute criminals.

Local offices of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) can help mortgage applicants find the resources they need to make smart mortgage decisions.
The Tennessee Real Estate Appraiser Commission and Real Estate Commission each help set fair practices and guidelines for mortgage lenders and homeowners. Both receive and investigate consumer complaints and have disciplinary authority over the professions they regulate. Consumers can also obtain information on the steps they should take in looking for mortgages through these departments.

Finally, the Better Business Bureau sets guidelines by which businesses should operate and takes steps to ensure that consumers are treated fairly.
