North Dakota - Mortgage Fraud Resources

Like many states, North Dakota has increased the penalties for mortgage fraud, making the crime a felony. Such penalties can be assessed against both lenders and homeowners. And with tougher penalties, local law enforcement agencies are also working more closely on such fraud cases than ever before.
Below is a list of resources for North Dakota residents who may have been affected by mortgage fraud or who simply want to learn more about the issue. FBI field offices are responsible for investigating potential cases of fraud and work with the offices of the state and federal attorneys general to prosecute criminals. Local FBI offices also work closely with law enforcement officials to identify possible fraud.
Local offices of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) can help mortgage applicants find the resources they need to make smart mortgage decisions.
The North Dakota Department of Financial Institutions helps to set rules, investigate complaints and exercises enforcement/disciplinary authority over the businesses it oversees. Its Real Estate Commission and Appraiser Ethics Board each have numerous sources of mortgage fraud information for consumers and can direct them to appropriate contacts for specific questions on mortgage fraud.
Finally, the Better Business Bureau sets guidelines by which businesses should operate and takes steps to ensure that consumers are treated fairly.
