Nebraska - Mortgage Fraud Resources

Nebraska hasn't been sheltered from the growing problem of mortgage fraud.
The state will continue benefit from stricter regulations having been put in place at both the state and federal levels to regulate and prosecute cases of mortgage fraud. For example, hundreds of more FBI agents and prosecutors have been, and will continue to be hired at the federal level in 2009 and beyond who will be charged with targeting mortgage fraud.
There is an estimated 5,000 fraud allegations made each month nationally, and many more that likely go unreported, according to the FBI. That department is one of many that is taking the leading in investigating such cases. The FBI also works with the offices of state and the federal Attorney Generals to prosecute criminals.
Other state and federal resources are also available to consumers wanting more information on mortgage fraud cases and protection. The Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offices can help mortgage applicants find the resources they need to make smart mortgage decisions.
The Department of Banking and Finance helps to set rules, investigates consumer complaints and exercises enforcement/disciplinary authority over the businesses it oversees. The Real Estate Commission and Appraiser Board each have numerous sources of mortgage fraud information for consumers and can direct them to appropriate contacts for specific questions on mortgage fraud.
The Better Business Bureau oversees all businesses and will take steps to ensure that consumers are being treated fairly by businesses across the country.
