Montana - Mortgage Fraud Resources

The Montana Board of Real Estate Appraisers has taken an active role in dealing with mortgage fraud throughout the state. This state-run organization coordinates efforts with local law enforcement agencies, FBI field offices and others.

Those FBI field offices are responsible for investigating potential cases of fraud and work with the offices of the state and federal attorneys general to prosecute criminals. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) can help mortgage applicants find the resources they need to make smart mortgage decisions.

The Montana Division of Banking and Financial Institutions helps to set rules, investigate complaints and exercise enforcement/disciplinary authority over the businesses it oversees. The Real Estate Commission its Appraisers each have numerous sources of mortgage fraud information for consumers and can direct them to appropriate contacts for specific questions on mortgage fraud.

The Better Business Bureau sets guidelines by which businesses should operate and takes steps to ensure that consumers are treated fairly. The Montana chapter of the BBB handles eastern Washington and northern Idaho as well.

A list of federal, state and private mortgage fraud resources and their contact information is provided below.
