Michigan - Mortgage Fraud Resources

Michigan has consistently been ranked among the top 10 states in reported foreclosures since the beginning of the new century. The state was already undergoing a mild recession because of the ills of the automotive industry, then was hit again by the bursting of the housing bubble in 2007. As a result, the state has been vulnerable to mortgage frauds that proliferate in tough economic times.

Fortunately there are many resources available to help Michigan consumers deal with mortgage fraud.

FBI field offices are responsible for investigating potential cases of fraud and work with the offices of the state and federal attorneys general to prosecute criminals. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) can help mortgage applicants find the resources they need to make smart mortgage decisions.

The Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Services is one state organization that helps to set fair practices and guidelines for mortgage lenders and homeowners. The State of Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Services also takes an active in role in investigating and enforcing fair mortgage and lending guidelines.

The State Board of Real Estate Appraisers has numerous sources of mortgage fraud information for consumers and can direct them to appropriate contacts for specific questions on mortgage fraud.

Finally, the Better Business Bureau sets guidelines by which businesses should operate and takes steps to ensure that consumers are treated fairly.
