Kentucky - Mortgage Fraud Resources

Many states are holding mortgage lenders to higher standards in the wake of the housing crisis that rocked the United States beginning in 2007. Kentucky is no exception.

Starting in 2008, Kentucky took steps to increase consumer protection and reduce mortgage fraud and predatory lending. The state's Department of Financial Institutions, the state agency that regulates the mortgage industry, was given greater authority to oversee lenders and enforce the mortgage statutes that year.

That's just one of the various state,federal and private agencies and organizations that are available in the state to provide homeowners and mortgage applicants with the resources they need to avoid getting caught up in mortgage fraud.

FBI field offices investigate potential cases of fraud and work with the state and federal attorneys general to prosecute criminals. Offices of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) can help mortgage applicants find the resources they need to make smart mortgage decisions.

The Department of Financial Institutions helps to set rules, investigate complaints and exercise enforcement/disciplinary authority over the businesses it oversees. The Real Estate Commission and Appraisers Board has numerous sources of mortgage fraud information for consumers and can direct them to appropriate contacts for specific questions on mortgage fraud.

The Better Business Bureau sets forth guidelines in which all businesses should operate and takea steps to ensure that consumers are being treated fairly.
