Kansas - Mortgage Fraud Resources

Mortgage fraud has been on the rise in Kansas. Incidents of the crime nearly doubled in 2008, according to state Attorney General Chris Koster. In response, the state has moved to toughen its mortgage-fraud laws, in particularly seeking tougher penalties for those convicted of preying on homeowners in foreclosure.

There are many resources available to Kansas residents who have been victimized by mortgage fraud or are simply seeking information on the subject. FBI field offices investigate potential cases of mortgage fraud and work with the state and the federal attorneys general to prosecute criminals. Offices of he Housing and Urban Development (HUD) can help borrowers and homeowners find the resources they need to make smart mortgage decisions.

The state's Department of Credit Unions help to set rules, investigate complaints and exercise enforcement/disciplinary authority over the businesses it oversees. The Real Estate Commission and Appraisal Board each has numerous sources of mortgage fraud information for consumers and can direct them to appropriate contacts for specific questions on mortgage fraud.

The Better Business Bureau sets forth guidelines in which all businesses should operate and will take steps to ensure that consumers are being treated fairly by businesses across the country.
