Alaska - Mortgage Fraud Resources

There is a wealth of resources available in Alaska for the reporting of potential mortgage fraud cases. It is recommended in Alaska that you contact the Office of the Attorney General and Better Business Bureau first before moving on to other resources based on literature provided by the State of Alaska.

The state took steps in 2007 and 2008 to more closely regulate mortgage companies that do business there. For example, mortgage lenders and salesperson that practice within the state must go through a lengthy certification process before they can begin practicing within the state.

Alaska Fraud Control is also a good state resource for questions and general information although this state-run organization focuses on all kinds of fraud. It does have a mortgage fraud division within the organization.

FBI field offices are responsible for investigating potential cases of fraud and working with offices of state and the federal Attorney Generals to prosecute criminals. The Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offices can help mortgage applicants find the resources they need to make smart mortgage decisions.

Finally, the Better Business Bureau sets forth guidelines by which all businesses should operate and takes steps to ensure that consumers are being treated fairly.
